Hurtigruten
Cruising year-round from Norway, Hurtigruten (formerly known in the U.S. as Norwegian Coastal Voyages) offers a variety of different specialty and exploration-style cruising itineraries. With their fleet of 13 small ships, Hurtigruten sails from 34 ports of call on 6, 7, 11 or 12-night Norwegian Coastal Voyages, including expedition cruises in Spitsbergen (in the Arctic), Greenland and Antarctica. There are over 1,000 short port to port variations to choose from on Hurtigruten's Norwegian Coastal Voyage itinerary.
Because of the intimate size of their ships, ranging from 2,191 to 16,151 tons, Hurtigruten is able to offer itineraries in the calm and sheltered waterways of Norway's shores, that larger ships simply cannot reach. This results in closer encounters with landscape and wildlife, as well as rare port of call. On board a Hurtigruten cruise ship, their Expedition Team gives informative lectures about the areas being visited, and guests are able to relax, unwind, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
Three hearty meals are offered per day during a Hurtigruten cruise, consisting of traditional Norwegian and continental fare. Breakfast and lunch are in an open-seating format, and are buffet-style. Evening meals have assigned seating, with a sit down waiter service and set menu. At times, lunch can be assigned if the ship is busy. If you'd like to snack between meals, there's a 24-hour cafeteria as well.
The atmosphere is always relaxed and informal during a Hurtigruten voyage, with a non-regimented environment. Hurtigruten is an alternative to a traditional cruise, as each Hurtigruten voyage vessel is a unique combination of a cruise ship and working ship, carrying local passengers and cargo between ports. However, the working aspect of the ship is completely seamless to their cruise vacation guests. While some Hurtigruten cruises may feature a pianist or local singer on board the ship, the real entertainment is the destination being visited. Travelers that like to visit less "touristy" ports of call, and enjoy an active, destination-immersed vacation, are a great fit for a Hurtigruten voyage.
American Discount Cruises & Travel is proud to offer the best deals possible on all Hurtigruten cruises booked with us. Backed by our "Low Price Guarantee," and powered by our team of expert travel agents, we're sure to exceed your expectations when booking your next Hurtigruten cruise!
Why Choose Hurtigruten?
Unique Voyages
Hurtigruten groups their cruise itineraries into five main regions: Norway, Spitsbergen, Greenland, Antarctica and Europe.
Hurtigruten has navigated the spectacular west coast of Norway for 120 years. During a Norwegian voyage, guests can enjoy 1,250 miles of fjord-filled landscapes, with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of shore excursions (including dog sledding, and snowmobiling), and the chance to see the elusive Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun, and the exciting Sea Eagle Safari in summer.

Those looking for an adventure cruise should consider Hurtigruten's voyages in Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica. Spitsbergen is filled with unspoiled nature and wildlife, with glaciers, whales, seals, birds, and rare Arctic flowers. Hurtigruten's Greenland expeditions bring their guests to the world's most active glaciers, calving of icebergs and close contact with the local Inuit population, all while providing cultural and historic insight through a wonderful variety of shore excursions and lectures. Antarctica offers mountains, fjords, glaciers, icebergs and wildlife, including several species of penguins. Polarcirkle boat landings, expedition guides and lecturers create an intimate learning experience and are perfect for the well-traveled in search of mind-enriching experiences.
Hurtigruten offers spring and fall voyages through Western Europe, the Baltic, British Isles and even North Africa, offering cultural immersion at every stop of the cruise.
Theme Cruises
In addition to their standard cruise voyages, Hurtigruten also offers cruises that have a certain theme. One of their most well known themed voyages are their Northern Lights Adventure cruises.
While searching for the amazing site of the Aurora Borealis, guests have the chance to visit the world famous ice hotel, the highlights of the Arctic, and much more! Please contact us if you'd like pricing and availability information on any of Hurtigruten's theme cruises.
One-In-A-Liftetime Excursions
During a Hurtigruten cruise, guests have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of unique shore excursions. Possibilities, depending on the time of year and destination, include city tours, snow mobile safaris, riverboat trips, dog sledding, kayaking, concerts, museums, and much more!
Polarcirkle Boat Landings are often available to Hurtigruten guests in Antarctica, Greenland and Spitsbergen. These special vehicles allow guests to get up close and personal with the native wildlife during their Hurtigruten cruise.
What's New for Hurtigruten?
The popularity of Hurtigruten and the Northern Lights Voyage is becoming quite apparent among travelers. A recent survey of British travelers puts Hurtigruten Northern Lights voyages at the very top of travel destination lists. Hurtigruten makes it very easy to experience the Norwegian Winter providing many attractive offers and shore excursion packages.
In February 2012, Hurtigruten announced that in less than two years after its launch, their "1893 Ambassador" Loyalty Program achieved an impressive 27,400 members. Members enjoy exclusive 10% discounts on the cruise component of any Classic Norway voyage longer than three days and 5% savings on Explorer Voyages to Europe or the remote destinations of Greenland, Antarctica or Spitsbergen. A variety of other benefits are available, including 5% savings on selected excursions on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage itineraries. |
